Facebook has consistently maintained a policy that “privacy is dead”. While this may seem like a neutral observation, it is actually a demand: “give up all your privacy”. Since the beginning, they have repeatedly forced their users to share private information. The most recent example is that if you enter a phone number for two-factor authentication, they share that phone number with all of your friends, and there is no way to opt out of this choice.
Facebook has been the center of many scandals and controversies. They track massive amounts of information on their users, and then share that information with other companies — some of which have political agendas.
In addition, I don’t like the experience of using Facebook. Most of what is posted is trivial fluff, material designed to make the reader feel smug and self-important. As I once observed, “the more I use Facebook, the lower my opinion of my friends becomes.”
If I am going to spend time online, I am going to spend it reading things that help me be a better person.
